Zephaniah 2

Judgments on Judah’s Enemies

1Gather yourselves together, yes, agather,
O nation bwithout
Or longing
shame,
2Before the decree
Lit is born
takes effect
The day passes elike the chaff
Before the fburning anger of the Lord comes upon you,
Before the gday of the Lord’s anger comes upon you.
3 hSeek the Lord,
All you ihumble of the
Or land
earth
Who have carried out His
Or justice
ordinances;
lSeek righteousness, seek humility.
Perhaps you will be mhidden
In the day of the Lord’s anger.

4For nGaza will be abandoned
And Ashkelon a desolation;
oAshdod will be driven out at noon
And pEkron will be uprooted.
5Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast,
The nation of the
I.e. a segment of the Philistines with roots in Crete
,
rCherethites!
The word of the Lord is sagainst you,
O tCanaan, land of the Philistines;
And I will udestroy you
So that there will be vno inhabitant.
6So the seacoast will be wpastures,
With
Or meadows or wells
caves for shepherds and folds for flocks.
7And the coast will be
For the yremnant of the house of Judah,
They will zpasture on it.
In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening;
For the Lord their God will aacare for them
And abrestore their fortune.

8I have heard the
Lit reproach
,
adtaunting of Moab
And the aerevilings of the sons of Ammon,
With which they have
Lit reproached
taunted My people
And
Lit made themselves great
,
ahbecome arrogant against their territory.
9Therefore, as I live,” declares the Lord of hosts,
The God of Israel,
Surely aiMoab will be like ajSodom
And the sons of akAmmon like alGomorrah
A place possessed by nettles and salt pits,
And a perpetual desolation.
The remnant of My people will amplunder them
And the remainder of My nation will inherit them.”

10This they will have in return for their anpride, because they have
Lit reproached
,
aptaunted and
Lit made themselves great
become arrogant against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11The Lord will be arterrifying to them, for He will
Lit make lean
starve atall the gods of the earth; and all the aucoastlands of the nations will avbow down to Him, everyone from his own place.
12You also, O awEthiopians, will be slain by My sword.”
13And He will axstretch out His hand against the north
And destroy ayAssyria,
And He will make azNineveh a desolation,
Parched like the wilderness.
14Flocks will lie down in her midst,
Or All kinds of beasts in crowds; lit Every kind of beast of a nation
All beasts which range in herds;
Both the
Or owl or jackdaw
,
bcpelican and the hedgehog
Will lodge in
Lit her capitals
the tops of her pillars;
Lit A voice
Birds will sing in the window,
Desolation will be on the threshold;
For He has laid bare the cedar work.
15This is the bfexultant city
Which bgdwells securely,
Who says in her heart,
bhI am, and there is no one besides me.”
How she has become a bidesolation,
A resting place for beasts!
bjEveryone who passes by her will hiss
And wave his hand in contempt.
